Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of building a deck in Toronto typically ranges from $35 to $75 per square foot, depending on the material (pressure-treated lumber, cedar, or composite), the deck height, complexity of design, and whether extras like railings, stairs, or a pergola are included. A standard 200 sq ft cedar deck generally starts around $8,000 to $12,000 installed. Contact YKWoodWorking for a free, detailed estimate for your specific project.
In Toronto, you need a building permit for most decks that are more than 24 inches (60 cm) above grade or attached to a house. Decks under 24 inches and not attached to the dwelling may be exempt, but it is always best to confirm with the City of Toronto Building Division. YKWoodWorking handles the entire permit application process for our clients, including drawings and submissions.
The most popular deck materials in Ontario are Western Red Cedar, pressure-treated (PT) lumber, and composite decking. Cedar is naturally resistant to rot and insects, ages beautifully, and is ideal for a premium look. Pressure-treated lumber is the most affordable option and works well for structure and decking. Composite decking (such as Trex or TimberTech) offers low maintenance and long-lasting color but costs more upfront. YKWoodWorking can help you choose the best material based on your budget and style.
A typical residential deck project in Toronto takes 1 to 3 weeks from start to finish, depending on the size and complexity. A simple ground-level deck may be completed in 3 to 5 days, while a multi-level deck with stairs, railings, and a pergola can take 2 to 3 weeks. The permit approval process, if required, can add 2 to 6 weeks before construction begins.
